Mentoring

  • The FAS Family Resource Institute is a collaboration of parent leaders working with professionals to help others identify, understand and care for individuals disabled by FASD and to prevent future generations from having to live with this disability. Our staff members are all parents, including birth, foster, adoptive, and grandparents. Because we have raised our own affected children into adulthood and interviewed literally hundreds of affected individuals and their families during the 15 years of our existence, we have gained the wisdom of practice. We intimately understand the unique perspective and needs of individuals with FASD and their families. We have learned how to access services for affected individuals of all ages in the following systems: mental health, developmental disability, social security, health care, chemical dependency, education, child welfare, vocational rehab and juvenile and criminal justice. We are not therapists or counselors, but we do provide mentoring to affected individuals, their parents and professionals who are struggling to help affected children, adolescents and adults. • The Parent Child Assistance Program (PCAP) is a model of intensive, long-term, paraprofessional advocacy with high-risk mothers who abuse alcohol or drugs heavily during pregnancy and are estranged from community service providers. The primary goal of PCAP is to prevent alcohol and drug exposure among the future children of these mothers. PCAP was established in 1991 and is a program within the Fetal Alcohol and Drug Unit at the University of Washington.
